U.S. Forces – Afghanistan October 2018 Strike Summary

KABUL, Afghanistan – U.S. Forces – Afghanistan engaged terror and security targets with 392 strikes consisting of 498 engagements in Afghanistan, October 1-31, 2018, to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven to the Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.

In addition, such strikes enable Afghan National Defense and Security Forces operations as Afghanistan and the international community continue to apply judicious military pressure to enable the Taliban’s eventual reconciliation, reintegration and realignment.

U.S. forces do not claim strikes are decisive; however, we may occasionally talk about this information to provide context.

A day-by-day breakdown of October follows:

On October 1, U.S. forces conducted nine strikes consisting of 11 engagements.
•In Helmand Province, five strikes destroyed two tactical units.
•In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed one heavy weapon and one tactical unit.
•In Kunar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Laghman Province, one strike destroyed one cave. 
•In Paktiya Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.

On October 2, U.S. forces conducted eight strikes consisting of nine engagements.
•In Helmand Province, two strikes destroyed one drug lab, one motorcycle, and one tactical unit.
•In Laghman Province, four strikes destroyed four caves including weapons caches.
•In Logar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Nangarhar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.

On October 3, U.S. forces conducted 17 strikes consisting of 20 engagements.
•In Ghazni Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Helmand Province, three strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Jowzjan Province, one strike suppressed enemy action.
•In Khost Province, one strike disrupted enemy action.
•In Kunar Province, two strikes destroyed one drug lab.
•In Laghman Province, two strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Nangarhar Province, four strikes destroyed three drug labs and denied the enemy terrain.
•In Paktiya Province, two strikes destroyed one weapons cache.
•In Uruzgan Province, one strike destroyed one heavy weapon and one tactical unit.



On October 4, U.S. forces conducted eight strikes consisting of nine engagements.
•In Helmand Province, three strikes destroyed one building and one tactical unit. 
•In Herat Province, one strike destroyed one house-borne improvised explosive device.
•In Kunar Province, two strikes destroyed two tactical units.
•In Uruzgan Province, two strikes destroyed one improvised explosive device.

On October 5, U.S. forces conducted 12 strikes consisting of 24 engagements.
•In Badghis Province, one strike disrupted enemy.
•In Farah Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Faryab Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Helmand Province, five strikes destroyed one drug lab, one motorcycle, and one tactical unit.
•In Kunar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Laghman Province, two strikes destroyed one cave and one tactical unit.
•In Nangarhar Province, one strike destroyed 10 buildings and one tactical unit.

On October 6, U.S. forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 17 engagements.
•In Farah Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Faryab Province, two strikes destroyed one building and one tactical unit.
•In Ghazni Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Kandahar Province, three strikes destroyed one house-borne improvised explosive device and one tactical unit.

On October 7, U.S. forces conducted 16 strikes consisting of 20 engagements.

On 8 October, U.S. forces conducted 7 strikes consisting of 9 engagements.
•In Laghman Province, one strike neutralized one mortar position. 
•In Logar Province, two strikes suppressed enemy.
•In Wardak Province, three strikes destroyed one enemy fighting position.
•In Zabul Province, one strike destroyed two motorcycles and two tactical units.

On 9 October, U.S. forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 10 engagements.
•In Farah Province, one strike destroyed one fighting position.
•In Faryab Province, two strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Logar Province, four strikes suppressed enemy action.
•In Nangarhar Province, two strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Wardak Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.

On October 10, U.S. forces conducted 28 strikes consisting of 48 engagements.
•In Faryab Province, four strikes destroyed three vehicles and one building.
•In Helmand Province, five strikes destroyed two buildings, two tactical units and one staging area.
•In Laghman Province, two strikes destroyed one weapons cache and one mortar position.
•In Nangarhar Province, five strikes destroyed three tactical units, one building, one cave and one weapons cache.
•In Paktiya Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Uruzgan Province, eight strikes destroyed nine fighting positions, six buildings, three tactical units and one moretar position.
•In Wardak Province, three strikes destroyed one tactical unit.

On October 11, U.S. forces conducted 16 strikes consisting of 21 engagements.
•In Faryab Province, one strike destroyed one enemy fighting position.
•In Helmand Province, five strikes destroyed one house-borne improvised explosive device, one tactical unit and suppressed three mortar positions.  
•In Jowzjan Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Nangarhar Province, four strikes destroyed two fighting positions, one building and one tactical unit.
•In Parwan Province, three strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Uruzgan Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Wardak Province, one strike destroyed one motorcycle and one tactical unit.

On October 12, U.S. forces conducted 20 strikes consisting of 21 engagements.
•In Helmand Province, two strikes destroyed one tactical unit and disrupted enemy action.
•In Kandahar Province, two strikes destroyed on homemade explosive cache.
•In Khost Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Kunduz Province, two strikes denied the enemy terrain.
•In Logar Province, three strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Nangarhar Province, nine strikes destroyed nine buildings. 
•In Parwan Province, one strike denied the enemy terrain.
On October 13, U.S. forces conducted 19 strikes consisting of 23 engagements.
•In Ghazni Province, four strikes destroyed four tactical units, one vehicle, one building, one improvised explosive device and one possible vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.
•In Helmand Province, three strikes destroyed one tactical unit and one possible vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.
•In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed one home-made explosive cache.
•In Kunduz Province, one strike destroyed on fighting position and weapons cache.
•In Laghman Province, two strikes destroyed one communications tower and one weapons cache.
•In Nangarhar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit and one improvised explosive device production facility.
•In Nuristan Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Paktika Province, three strikes destroyed two tactical units.
•In Uruzgan Province, two strikes destroyed one tactical unit and one improvised explosive device.

On October 14, U.S. forces conducted 16 strikes consisting of 16 engagements.
•In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed three motorcycles and one tactical unit.
•In Faryab Province, eight strikes destroyed seven buildings, one tactical unit and one fighting position.
•In Ghazni Province, three strikes destroyed one vehicle-borne improvised explosive device and one cave.
•In Kunduz Province, one strike disrupted enemy action.
•In Laghman Province, one strike destroyed one fighting position.
•In Nangarhar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Parwan Province, one strike denied the enemy terrain.

On October 15, U.S. forces conducted 21 strikes consisting of 31 engagements.
•In Ghazni Province, three strikes destroyed one vehicle and one anti-aircraft weapon system.
•In Helmand Province, five strikes destroyed four vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, one building and one tactical unit.
•In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed one communications tower.
•In Laghman Province, four strikes destroyed six fighting positions, one heavy weapon system and one tactical unit. 
•In Nuristan Province, one strike disrupted enemy.
•In Paktika Province, three strikes destroyed three vehicles, two fighting positions, one motorcycle and one tactical unit.
•In Uruzgan Province, one strike destroyed one communications tower.
•In Wardak Province, three strikes destroyed one vehicle-borne improvised explosive device and one tactical unit.

On October 16, U.S. forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 22 engagements.
•In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed one communications tower.
•In Logar Province, two strikes destroyed one rocket and denied the enemy terrain.
•In Nangarhar Province, 10 strikes destroyed two fighting positions, three buildings, two tactical units and one vehicle.
•In Paktika Province, one strike destroyed two tactical units and one building.

On October 17, U.S. forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 21 engagements.
•In Helmand Province, three strikes destroyed two buildings and one tactical unit.
•In Laghman Province, four strikes destroyed four fighting positions and weapons caches.
•In Logar Province, two strikes destroyed one communications tower.

On October 25, U.S. forces conducted 12 strikes consisting of 13 engagements.

On October 26, U.S. forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 11 engagements.

On October 27, U.S. forces conducted five strikes consisting of six engagements.
•In Ghazni Province, one strike denied the enemy terrain.

On October 28, U.S. forces conducted eight strikes consisting of 20 engagements.

On October 29, U.S. forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 10 engagements.

•In Paktika Province, three strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
•In Parwan Province, one strike destroyed one mortar position.

On October 30, U.S. forces conducted four strikes consisting of four engagements.

•In Logar Province, one strike denied the enemy terrain.
•In Nangarhar Province, one strike disrupted enemy actions.

On October 31, U.S. forces conducted one strike consisting of one engagement.
•In Ghazni Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.

This summary contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, rotary-wing, or remotely piloted aircraft, rocket propelled artillery and ground-based tactical artillery.  U.S. Forces – Afghanistan may refine strike assessments.

A strike, as defined in the release, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative effect in that location against Taliban irreconcilables and Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations that threaten Afghanistan and the 41 Resolute Support nations and their citizens. 

U.S. Forces – Afghanistan does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.
