U.S. Forces – Afghanistan January 2019 Strike Summary

KABUL, Afghanistan – U.S. Forces – Afghanistan engaged terror and security targets with 369 strikes consisting of 410 engagements in Afghanistan, January 1-31, 2019, to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven to the Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.

In addition, such strikes enable Afghan National Defense and Security Forces operations and compliment the Resolute Support train, advise and assist mission, as Afghanistan and the international community continue to apply judicious military pressure to enable the Taliban’s eventual reconciliation, reintegration and realignment.

U.S. forces do not purport that strikes are decisive; however, we may occasionally talk about this information to provide context.

A day-by-day breakdown of the month follows:

On January 1, U.S. forces conducted five strikes.
In Helmand Province, one strike was conducted.
In Kandahar Province, two strikes were conducted.
In Parwan Province, two strikes were conducted.

On January 2, U.S. forces conducted 12 strikes consisting of 13 engagements.
In Faryab Province, one strike was conducted.
In Herat Province, one strike was conducted.
In Kandahar Province, one strike was conducted.
In Kapisa Province, two strikes were conducted.
In Laghman Province, one strike was conducted.
In Logar Province, two strikes were conducted.

On January 8, U.S. forces conducted nine strikes consisting of nine engagements.

On January 30, U.S. forces conducted 3 strikes consisting of 3 engagements.

On January 31, U.S. forces conducted 5 strikes consisting of 5 engagements.

In Uruzgan Province, one strike was conducted.


The aforementioned summary contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, 
rotary-wing, or remotely piloted aircraft, rocket propelled artillery and ground-based tactical artillery.  U.S. Forces – Afghanistan may refine strike assessments.

A strike, as defined in the release, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative effect in that location against Taliban irreconcilables and Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations that threaten Afghanistan and the 41 Resolute Support nations and their citizens. 

U.S. Forces – Afghanistan does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.
