U.S. Forces – Afghanistan February 2020 Strike Summary

KABUL, Afghanistan – U.S. Forces – Afghanistan engaged terror and security targets with 370 strikes in Afghanistan, February 1-29, 2020, to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven to the Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.

In addition, such strikes enable Afghan National Defense and Security Forces operations and compliment the Resolute Support train, advice and assist mission, as Afghanistan and the international community continue to apply judicious military pressure to enable the Taliban’s eventual reconciliation, reintegration and realignment.

U.S. forces do not mean that strikes are decisive; however, we may occasionally talk about this information to provide context.


A day-by-day breakdown of the month follows:

On February 1, U.S. forces conducted 30 strikes.

•In Balkh Province, three strikes were conducted

•In Farah Province, one strike was conducted

•In Faryab Province, eight strikes were conducted

•In Helmand Province, three strikes were conducted

•In Herat Province, three strikes were conducted

•In Nangarhar Province, eight strikes were conducted

•In Uruzgan Province, one strike was conducted

•In Zabul Province, three strikes were conducted

 

On February 2, U.S. forces conducted 4 strikes.

•In Balkh Province, one strike was conducted

•In Nangarhar Province, three strikes were conducted

 

On February 3, U.S. forces conducted 7 strikes.

On February 25, U.S. forces conducted 2 strikes.

The aforementioned summary contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, rotary-wing, or remotely-piloted aircraft, rocket-propelled artillery and ground-based tactical artillery.  U.S. Forces – Afghanistan may refine strike assessments.

A strike, as defined in the release, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative effect in that location against Taliban irreconcilables and Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations that threaten Afghanistan and the 41 Resolute Support nations and their citizens.

U.S. Forces – Afghanistan does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.
