U.S. Forces – Afghanistan September 2018 Strike Summary

KABUL, Afghanistan – U.S. Forces – Afghanistan engaged terror and security targets with 465 strikes consisting of 522 engagements in Afghanistan, September 1-30, 2018, to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven to the Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.

In addition, such strikes enable Afghan National Defense and Security Forces operations and compliment the Resolute Support train, advise and assist mission, as Afghanistan and the international community continue to apply judicious military pressure to enable the Taliban’s eventual reconciliation, reintegration and realignment.

U.S. forces do not purport that strikes are decisive; however, we may occasionally talk about this information to provide context.

A day-by-day breakdown of the month follows:

On September 1, U.S. forces conducted two strikes consisting of four engagements.
• In Helmand Province, one strike destroyed one command and control site and one tactical unit.
• In Nangarhar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.

On September 2, U.S. forces conducted seven strikes consisting of 10 engagements.
• In Farah Province, one strike destroyed one command and control site.
• In Helmand Province, four strikes destroyed one motorcycle and one tactical unit.
• In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed one homemade explosive cache.
• In Nangarhar Province, one strike denied terrain.

On September 3, U.S. forces conducted nine strikes consisting of 11 engagements.
• In Helmand Province, four strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Kabul Province, two strikes destroyed one structure and one tactical unit.
• In Kapisa Province, one strike denied terrain.
• In Logar Province, one strike destroyed one rocket.
• In Paktika Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.

On September 4, U.S. forces conducted 21 strikes consisting of 31 engagements.
• In Helmand Province, nine strikes destroyed eight vehicles, two tactical units, one command and control site, and one fighting position.
• In Herat Province, two strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed one vehicle and one tactical unit.
• In Kunar Province, four strikes destroyed one fighting position, one weapons cache, and one tactical unit.
• In Kunduz Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Nangarhar Province, two strikes destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Wardak Province, two strikes denied terrain.

On September 5, U.S. forces conducted 23 strikes consisting of 25 engagements.
• In Ghazni Province, three strikes destroyed one vehicle.
• In Helmand Province, three strikes destroyed one drug lab, one motorcycle, and one tactical unit.
• In Kandahar Province, five strikes destroyed two tactical units, one vehicle, one weapon, one fighting position, and one improvised explosive device (IED).
• In Kapisa Province, three strikes denied terrain.
• In Nangarhar Province, eight strikes destroyed one fighting position and one tactical unit.
• In Uruzgan Province, one strike denied terrain.

On September 6, U.S. forces conducted 21 strikes consisting of 29 engagements.
• In Helmand Province, three strikes destroyed one drug lab, one vehicle, and one tactical unit.
• In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed two tactical units, one weapons cache, and one tunnel system.
• In Khost Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Kunar Province, three strikes destroyed four fighting positions
• In Laghman Province, six strikes destroyed two fighting positions and denied enemy terrain.
• In Logar Province, two strikes destroyed two buildings and denied terrain.
• In Nangarhar Province, four strikes denied terrain.
• In Paktiya Province, one strike destroyed one motorcycle and one tactical unit.

On September 7, U.S. forces conducted 27 strikes consisting of 29 engagements.
• In Helmand Province, one strike destroyed one motorcycle.
• In Kabul Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Logar Province, one strike neutralized one car bomb.
• In Nangarhar Province, 23 strikes destroyed two structures, one tactical unit, and denied terrain.
• In Paktika Province, one strike destroyed one vehicle and one tactical unit.

On 8 September, U.S. forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 16 engagements.
• In Helmand Province, five strikes destroyed two tactical units.
• In Wardak Province, seven strikes destroyed one cave and one weapons cache.
• In Logar Province, two strikes denied terrain.

On 9 September, U.S. forces conducted 25 strikes consisting of 28 engagements.
• In Baghlan Province, three strikes neutralized two vehicles and destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Helmand Province, five strikes destroyed one structure, one tactical unit, and denied terrain.
• In Kapisa Province, one strike destroyed one bomb making facility and one tactical unit.
• In Kunar Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Nangarhar Province, eight strikes destroyed one structure, one tactical unit, and denied terrain.
• In Paktiya Province, one strike destroyed one motorcycle and one tactical unit.
• In Wardak Province, six strikes destroyed one car bomb facility, one structure, one tactical unit, and denied terrain.

On September 10, U.S. forces conducted 36 strikes consisting of 42 engagements.
• In Baghlan Province, six strikes destroyed two motorcycles and two tactical units.
• In Ghazni Province, two strikes destroyed three tactical units and two structures.
• In Helmand Province, six strikes destroyed one command and control site, one tactical unit, and one vehicle.
• In Khost Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Nangarhar Province, four strikes destroyed seven structures and two tactical units.
• In Sar-e Pul Province, three strikes destroyed two tactical units.
• In Wardak Province, 14 strikes destroyed seven command and control sites, one cave, one vehicle, one building, one storage facility, and one tactical unit.

On September 11, U.S. forces conducted 20 strikes consisting of 21 engagements.
• In Baghlan Province, two strikes destroyed two structures and one tactical unit.
• In Helmand Province, two strikes destroyed one drug lab and one tactical unit.
• In Laghman Province, two strikes destroyed one fighting position and denied terrain.

On September 12, U.S. forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 18 engagements.

On September 13, U.S. forces conducted three strikes consisting of three engagements.

On September 14, U.S. forces conducted three strikes consisting of three engagements.
• In Helmand Province, one strike destroyed two tactical units and one motorcycle.
• In Nangarhar Province, one strike disrupted enemy operations.
• In Paktiya Province, one strike destroyed two tactical units and one motorcycle.

On September 15, U.S. forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 14 engagements.

On September 18, U.S. forces conducted 13 strikes consisting of 17 engagements.

On September 19, U.S. forces conducted 11 strikes consisting of 13 engagements.

On September 20, U.S. forces conducted 16 strikes consisting of 17 engagements.

On September 21, U.S. forces conducted 17 strikes consisting of 17 engagements.

On September 24, U.S. forces conducted seven strikes consisting of seven engagements.

On September 25, U.S. forces conducted 27 strikes consisting of 30 engagements.
• In Kapisa Province, three strikes destroyed one vehicle, one tactical unit, and suppressed enemy.
• In Kunduz Province, three strikes destroyed three structures.
• In Nangarhar Province, one strike destroyed one motorcycle and one tactical unit.
• In Uruzgan Province, 20 strikes destroyed ten structures, three fighting positions, and three tactical units.

On September 26, U.S. forces conducted four strikes consisting of four engagements.
• In Kapisa Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit and one heavy weapon.
• In Kunduz Province, two strikes destroyed one structure, one tactical unit, and one tunnel.
• In Uruzgan province, one strike suppressed one fighting position.

On September 27, U.S. forces conducted 17 strikes consisting of 17 engagements.
• In Faryab Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Ghazni Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.
• In Helmand Province, six strikes destroyed one bomb cache, two motorcycles, one command and control site, and one tactical unit.
• In Kandahar Province, one strike destroyed one weapons cache.
• In Kunduz Province, five strikes destroyed five structures.
• In Laghman Province, two strikes destroyed three caves.
• In Uruzgan Province, one strike destroyed one tactical unit.

On September 28, U.S. forces conducted 22 strikes consisting of 22 engagements.

On September 30, U.S. forces conducted 10 strikes consisting of 10 engagements.
• In Helmand Province, three strikes destroyed one motorcycle and one tactical unit.
• In Jowzjan Province, one strike destroyed three structures.
• In Nangarhar Province, five strikes destroyed two tactical units.
• In Uruzgan Province, one strike denied terrain.

The aforementioned summary contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, rotary-wing, or remotely piloted aircraft, rocket propelled artillery and ground-based tactical artillery.  U.S. Forces – Afghanistan may refine strike assessments.

A strike, as defined in the release, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative effect in that location against Taliban irreconcilables and Islamic State Khorasan Province, al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations that threaten Afghanistan and the 41 Resolute Support nations and their citizens.

U.S. Forces – Afghanistan does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.
