HERAT, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Gen. Austin Scott Miller, Resolute Support commander, met with Train, Advise and Assist Command-West soldiers September 10 at Camp Arena-Herat for a 9/11 memorial ceremony to honor victims of the terrorist attack that happened 17 years ago.
Miller, along with the Train, Advise and Assist Command-West commander, memorialized the 9/11 victims by laying a wreath at the Camp Arena fallen soldiers monument. Miller highlighted how Italy, and other coalition nations, have worked alongside the U.S. since it was attacked by international terrorism and still, after seventeen years, continue to stand alongside providing outstanding support.
After the ceremony, Miller visited the training areas of the Italian contingent and coalition soldiers. He wanted to meet the soldiers who were committed to train future Afghan National Defense Security Forces instructors who are following the innovative training invented and developed by the Italian contingent called "OMNIA.”
During his visit, Miller had the opportunity to meet Region West civilian and military authorities. During the Shura (meeting) Miller received a clear overview of the general situation in the region with a focus on specific aspects such as, security situation, upcoming elections, the development of education and economic sectors and peace and reconciliation process.
"I [am] very grateful that Resolute Support commander seated today with us to discuss about the situation in Region West,” said Mohammad Asif Rahimi, Herat governor.
Miller, at the end of the meeting, expressed deep appreciation for the Afghan National Defense Security Force’s commitment in defending their country "pushing them to be more proactive” in dealing with security related issues.
Established in 2015, Resolute Support (RS) is a NATO-led, non-combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), who assumed nationwide responsibility for Afghanistan’s security following the conclusion of the previous NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission. Its purpose is to help the Afghan security forces and institutions develop the capacity to defend Afghanistan and protect its citizens in a sustainable manner.
