Herat. Earlier this week, Italian Brigadier General Giovanni Parmiggiani officially took command of Train Advise and Assist Command West (TAAC-W) at Forward Operating Base "Camp Arena”.

The ceremony took place between the staff of "Friuli" Airmobile Brigade, commanded during recent six months by Brigadier General Salvatore Annigliato, and "Pozzuolo del Friuli" Cavalry Brigade.

It was attended by the Italian Army Chief of Staff, General Salvatore Farina, His Excellency the Italian Ambassador in Afghanistan, Roberto Cantone, Resolute Support Deputy Commander and Italian Senior National Representative in Afghanistan, Lieutenant General Salvatore Camporeale and also the highest civilian and military Afghan authorities in the western Region.

Camporeale thanked the outgoing TAAC-W Commander, Brigadier General Annigliato, and his "Friuli" Airmobile Brigade for excellent work and great results obtained in train, advice and assist activities for the Afghan National Defense Security Forces (ANDSF) as well as for many activities in Civil and Military Cooperation conducted in support of the local population.

General Farina brought greetings from the Italian Minister of Defense and Chief of Staff of Italian Defense. "I honour our flags which are symbols of our culture and ideals, symbols of justice and freedom", he said. The General also remembered Resolute Support and ANDSF service members who gave their lives for the sake of peace and stability in Afghanistan. In TAAC-W, nations stand united under the NATO flag: Albania, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia, Ukraine, United States of America.

Ambassador Cantone highlighted the close link between security and development. On behalf of the Italian Government, he honoured the fallen soldiers, their families and those who served and continue to serve so that Afghanistan may become a peaceful and prosperous country.

On the same day, Task Force Arena was handed over from Italian 66th Airmobile Infantry Regiment "Trieste" of Forlì to Lagunari Amphibious Regiment "Serenissima" of Venice. This unit will now provide support to TAAC-W.

NATO remains resolute to enable Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. Our objective is to protect our homelands and enable the Afghans paving their way towards a political settlement.
