Brig. Gen. Gianluca Carai (ITA)


Brigadier General Gianluca Carai commands Train, Advise, Assist Command-West.

Since March 3, 2017, he has been the 43rd Commander of the "Sassari” Brigade.

Brigadier General CARAI has commanded at every possible level and has served in a wide variety of assignments, including: Platoon Leader, Deputy Company and Company Commander at the 187th parachutist Regiment in Livorno and at the Paratrooper Military Training Center in Pisa; Company Commander at the 187th parachutist Regiment; Operations Officer at the 187th para. Regiment and 235th "Piceno” Regiment in Ascoli Piceno; Battalion Commander of the 151st "Sassari” Regiment in Cagliari; Commander of the 152nd "Sassari” Regiment in Sassari.

His Staff appointments include: Staff Officer at the Planning Office of the Army General Staff; Staff Officer at the General Planning Office of the Defence General Staff; Chief of the International Activity Section at the Planning Office of the Army General Staff; Chief of the Planning Office of the Army General Staff; Chief of the Planning Office of the Defence General Staff; Deputy Chief of the Planning Department of the Army General Staff.

His operational tours include: Operation UNOSOM, SOMALIA (1992-1993 and 1993-1994); Operation ALBA, ALBANIA (1997); Operation SFOR, BOSNIA (1996 and1999);  J2 Analyst UN Military Operations in the LEBANON (2009);  Operation ISAF, AFGHANISTAN (2011-2012).

Brigadier General CARAI has been awarded the following decorations: Army Meritorious Golden Cross for operations in Afghanistan; Golden Cross for Seniority of Service;  Commemorative Cross for peacekeeping operations in Somalia; Commemorative Cross for peacekeeping operation abroad; Commemorative Cross for homeland public order operations (Domino, Vespri Siciliani); UN Medal for peacekeeping operations in Somalia; NATO Medal for peacekeeping operations in Bosnia; US Meritorious Service Medal; Spanish Commemorative Medal for peacekeeping operations in Bosnia; Commemorative Cross for humanitarian aid mission in Albania; Commemorative Medal for service at UN HQ.

His military education includes:
- Military School in Naples (1983-86);
- Military Academy in Modena (1986-88);
- School of Applied Military Studies in Turin (1988-90);
- War School in Civitavecchia (1999);
- Advanced Joint Staff Course at the "Escuela Superior de las Fuerzas Armadas” in Madrid (2002-03);
- Military Higher Studies Centre in Paris (2012-13).
In addition, he holds a University Degree in:
- Economics and Business;
- Strategic Sciences;
- Diplomatic and International Science;
- 2nd level Master in Strategic Sciences.

Brigadier General CARAI speaks English, French, and Spanish fluently.
He is a native of Pisa, is married and has two daughters, and his hobbies are going on holiday with his family whenever he can…practically never!
