Maj. Gen. Robin L. Fontes is the commander, Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan, and deputy chief of staff, security assistance, for Headquarters, Resolute Support. She was raised in Kuna, Idaho and graduated from the U. S. Military Academy in 1986, where she was commissioned into the Military Police Corps.
Her previous general officer assignments include deputy director, Strategy, Plans, and Policy, U.S. Army Chief of Staff, and senior defense official and defense attaché to India.
Fontes has earned a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree in Soviet Studies from the University of Washington and a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the National Defense University. Her military education includes Military Police Basic and Advanced Courses, the Command and General Staff College and the National War College.
Other previous assignments include: Defense and Army attaché to Tajikistan; Central Asia political-military affairs officer, U.S. Central Command; Chief political affairs, later chief, Regional Engagement, Combined Forces, Command – Afghanistan; Commander, Provincial Reconstruction Team – Uruzgan, Combined Joint Task Force 76; Chief, later deputy commander, Office of the Defense Representative – Pakistan; Commander Regional Support Command – North, NTM-A/CSTC-A; Senior advisor to the commander, later director, Election Support Cell, ISAF Joint Command. Her operational assignments include: three deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan.
Fontes’ awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.
